Self Coaching

By Joe Hunt

In the rough and tumble world of world-class competition there is a single, common factor that all performers share. Champions and also-rans alike all have coaches whose purpose is to teach, inspire, and constantly demand the best.

In our personal and professional lives we, too, need coaches. While I believe the greatest benefits will be derived from hiring a professional or executive coach, having a mentor and participating in mastermind groups, a good place to start is to become your own coach.

Four Steps to Coaching

How can you become your own coach?

1. Assume full responsibility for your own actions, results and performances.
Your success and security depend on your coaching yourself to higher levels of performance. You will have to reach within and use your best skills to bring out the best you have to offer.

2. Define your core competencies.
What is your talent? What do you care passionately about? What do you want to do more than anything else in the world? Nothing great was ever achieved without talent being intimately linked to passion. Nothing is more frustrating than passion without talent, and nothing more wasteful than talent without emotional commitment. The great coaches are ones who identify talent, place that talent in the right situation, and then fuel the player’s inner passions. You have to do the same thing for yourself. No one can do that for you.

3. Clearly define the long-term goals you want to achieve.
In the areas of your life that matter most, how will you ultimately define victory?
Without clear definition, there cannot be a clear victory. And unclear victory leads to lingering doubt, frustration, and anguish.

4. Practice, feedback, practice.
Now we must do two things in our dual role as both trainee and coach:
1) continually refine our skills through repetitive practice; and
2) learn from both positive and negative feedback. The biggest challenge to being your own coach
is obtaining an accurate self-perception.

Self limiting behavior, blind spots as to how we perform, and fuzzy self perception are all deterrents to the self-coach. Without a baseline measurement of current performance, it is impossible to determine what to improve. Learn through both positive and negative feedback. Behaviors that are reinforced are most likely to be repeated. Study your successful patterns of performance. Also, study your errors to learn what to eliminate.

Make the wise choice to become your own coach. Once you begin to get some clarity and you begin to gain some perspective and momentum, make an investment in yourself and seek an a professional or executive coach, find a mentor, and join a mastermind group.
