Position Overview

·         To build and lead the R&D function’s integrated Research Department (which strategically combines all Research programs together) by increasing focus and leveraging best practices to consistently enable all our Research programs both in Core & New Categories.  This will be in strong partnership with the Sr. Scientific Fellow in R&D.

·         To lead a category team in the design and execution of the new categories’ R&D strategy and projects to drive innovation aligned to the business strategic plan. 

·         To partner with the Global Head, R&D in aligning the organization with the strategy, driving change efforts and ensuring the progression and integration of business initiatives, including preparation of reports to the companies Senior Management and the Board of Directors.  This role will be part of the R&D Leadership Team (RDLT).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

STRATEGIC RESEARCH & NEW CATEGORIES

·         Lead the newly established Core category research programs (Pain & Cough/Cold), New Category research programs (Sleep, Science based Naturals, future Category exploration)        until proof-of-concept/graduation.

·         Owns and manages the overall Research process. (Graduated research programs will continue outside of the research category as development projects.)

·         In partnership with Global Marketing, leads the development of a global strategic vision for the New Categories. Determines critical opportunities to drive growth. Encourages innovative thinking to create and develop long-term commercial value.

·         Owns New Categories’ development strategy and projects within category. Collaborates across functions to build regulatory, clinical, development, sourcing, manufacturing, supply strategies.

·         Systematically evaluates medical, pharmaceutical and regulatory market trends, consumer needs and opportunities, and plans product(s) innovation priorities accordingly.

·         Partners with marketing to build and execute commercialization plans, publication plans, and KOL and global interface network development plans.

·         Oversees the development search and reapply efforts in partnership with BD&L and facilitates communication among regions.  Leads and/or contributes to medical-marketing activities.  Develops and fully supports clinical data required to achieve claims.

·         Forms cross-Division partnerships and external/third party alliances and teams to ensure the success of the New Categories.

STRATEGIC PLANNING & COMMUNICATIONS

  • Partner with Global Head, R&D and Finance Head on the Strategic Planning process for R&D
  • Partner with R&D Finance Head and R&D Operations Head to align R&D function’s operational and financial processes, measures, and related updates to RDLT
  • Partner with R&D HR Head to align the RDLT on the design of the R&D Global Footprint and organization’s workforce planning.
  • Provide thought partnership to R&D Global Head and jointly problem solve with R&D Leadership (RDLT) team members on key issues
  • Provide guidance to organization around problem structuring, action planning, and recommendation synthesis
  • Synthesize R&D functional agenda, results, data, and issues and create high quality – strategic and concise presentations on behalf of the Global R&D Head for key audiences (e.g. CEO Parent Company, Executive Committee, Board of Directors, OTC GLT etc.)
  • Actively participate and run OTC R&D Leadership Team monthly meetings, including preparation of agenda and minutes.
  • Provides direction and support with various R&D communication methods to OTC stakeholders and audiences (including R&D associates in affiliates – markets)

Key Performance Indicators

  • 3-year risk adjusted Sales
  • NPV – value of the Innovation Portfolio (identify the value of the research portfolio)
  • % of Milestones achieved for both Innovation
  • Projects graduated through the pipeline
  • Successful leadership and results on highly visible OTC processes and R&D priority projects (milestones achieved, projects on-time and within budget)
  • Stakeholder expectations and associate engagement (communication effectiveness)
  • Operational alignment and prioritization against strategies (R&D Strategy Map)
  • Development of successful key interactions with R&D Leadership Team, GLT, Corporate and other divisional core teams
  • Quality and preparation of presentations for R&D and Division Head
  • Quality of Group presentations ( i.e. ECN, BOD)
  • Accuracy of data interpretation and recommendations

Education & Experience

  • Preferably Advanced degree such as MBA, JD, MD
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English
  • Ten to Fifteen years of Pharmaceutical and/or Over the Counter industry experience.
  • Extensive working knowledge in research and development along with very good breadth of R&D experience in one or more technical areas (clinical, product development, regulatory etc.)
  • Mastery of team leadership necessary to work collaboratively with diverse parts of the business, such as other functions or Divisions
  • Demonstrated understanding of the interdependencies of scientific results and commercial possibilities and the use of this knowledge to make appropriate business decisions.
  • Awareness of cultural differences in different geographic areas and in potentially different approaches to development by an external partner. Demonstrated track record of leading a complex (e.g. cross-functional, matrix designed) project team.
  • 3+ years of top-tier consulting background (>project manager level); Pharma / FMCG experience very desirable
  • Excellent process management skills
  • Advanced project management skills
  • Excellent analytical skills (problem structuring and problem solving), able to manage complex analyses
  • Ability to influence and map knowledge flow within an organization
  • Ability to review and analyze and interpret data and make recommendations
  • Excellent communication and conceptual synthesis skills (written and oral, PowerPoint mastering)
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively across a  Global, matrix cross-functional environment
  • Passionate, positive attitude with proven ability to motivate  and cultivate high performing teams
  • Outstanding flexibility, adaptability and sense of accountability
